Student Leadership Awards

The 2019 Student Leadership Awards honor the exemplary leadership, service and programmatic contributions of students and student organizations to the VCU and Richmond communities. We invite students, staff and faculty to nominate individuals and organizations and tell the stories of how they make VCU a great place to be.

Advisor of the Year Award

This award recognizes an advisor that has shown dedication to their student organization over the past year. The successful advisor for this award should be an individual who has been committed to the organization and contributed to the organization’s success. 

Essay Prompt: Please illustrate how the Advisor did the following:

  1. Helped organization members carry out mission and goals.
  2. Provided guidance, support, and encouragement to members.
  3. Made themselves available to members and was approachable and open to new ideas.
  4. Utilized different and creative approaches to educating and assisting members.
  5. Served as a positive role model.

Dr. Henry G. Rhone Excellence in Student Affairs Award

Presented to undergraduate and graduate/professional students who have provided distinguished service to the Division of Student Affairs and/or the University.  Criteria:  2.7 cumulative GPA or greater, Sophomore status or greater, demonstrated leadership and involvement in the organized student community.

Essay Prompt: What do you consider to be  the nominee's most significant achievement to date in its value to the school or larger community?  In what ways was it important to others?

Presented to undergraduate and graduate/professional students who have provided outstanding service and commitment to university committees, student organizations and/or the Richmond community.

Division of Student Affairs Emerging Peer Leader Award

The DSA Emerging Peer Leader Award is awarded to a first-time peer leader within the division of student affairs who has significantly contributed to their department and to the division.

Students must be in good academic standing and must be in the first year of their position of employment to be considered. 

Essay Prompt:  How has this peer leader stood out in their position and what is their potential future impact on their department and across the division? Please use specific examples when possible.

Division of Student Affairs Senior Peer Leader of the Year Award

The DSA Senior Peer Leader Award is awarded to senior peer leaders with more than one year of experience in the position within the division of student affairs who has significantly contributed to their department and to the division.

Students must be in good academic standing and must be graduating seniors (May or December 2019) to be considered. 

Essay Prompt:  How as this peer leader grown in their position and how have they impacted their peers and fellow peer leaders? What makes them stand out across their department and division? Please use specific examples when possible.

Division of Student Affairs Peer Leader of the Year Award

The DSA Peer Leader of the Year award is awarded to a peer leader within the division of student affairs who has gone above and beyond to develop and engage their peers and contributing to the success of their department and the division.

Students must be in good academic standing to be considered.  This is open to all peer leader positions, regardless of experience or years in the position.

Essay Prompt: What makes this student the best peer leader in their department? How has their work impacted their peers, position, department, and the division? Please use specific examples when possible.

Most Improved Student Organization Award

This award recognizes a student organization that has demonstrated significant improvement in membership recruitment and retention, budget management, program planning, and leadership while following the mission and goals of their organization. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Outstanding Community Service Award

This award recognizes a student organization’s overall community service efforts for an ongoing program or a series of programs. Service must have been completed between March 2, 2018 and March 1, 2019. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Outstanding Graduate and Professional Student Organization Award

This award recognizes a graduate or professional student organization that has made a significant contribution to the VCU community through programming, special initiatives and/or community service between March 2, 2018 and March 1, 2019. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Outstanding Health Science Organization Award

This award recognizes a student organization with a health sciences focus that has significantly contributed to the VCU and Richmond Communities through programs, initiatives, and/or community service. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Outstanding New Student Organization Award

This award recognizes a new student group who has demonstrated significant success and development in following the mission and goals of their organization. Student organizations applying for this award must have start date after July 1, 2018. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Outstanding Student Organization Program Award

This award recognizes a student organization’s success for an individual program that enhanced the VCU community. The program described must have been completed between March 2, 2018 and March 1, 2019. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Student Organization Advocacy Award

This award recognizes a student organization for their contributions as an advocate for a specific social issue across campus or in the community. All contributions described must have been completed between March 2, 2018 and March 1, 2019. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Student Organization Diversity and Inclusion Award

This award recognizes a student organization’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and/or social justice through programming and initiatives. Programs and initiatives must have been completed between March 2, 2018 and March 1, 2019. The winner of this award will receive $100 in their on-campus account.

Student Organization of the Year Award

Student organizations applying for this award should demonstrate success in organization development, leadership, service, and membership engagement. The winner of this award will receive $500 in their on-campus account.

Presented to undergraduate and graduate/professional students in leadership roles in student organizations or University committees who have distinguished themselves by demonstrating outstanding leadership ability and commitment to their organizations.

This award is presented to a Monroe Park Campus undergraduate senior who has exhibited exemplary characteristics in the areas of scholastics, leadership and service to VCU and the Richmond Community. 

Students must apply for the award and complete the essay questions below.

This award is presented to students who have provided exemplary service, beyond normal expectations,  in student activities, student groups and/or organizations and are in good academic standing.
